My Ship's Coming In

© Richard Ridley

The lighthouse shines bright in the night
It warns us to keep off the rocks
We charter our course by its light
So tomorrow we'll be back in dock

My ship's coming in
Safe harbour is near
My ship's coming in
As homeward we steer
My ship's coming in

We've been on this voyage for seven long months
And I just cannot wait to get home
We all got the channels as we sailed through Biscay
As we thought of the pleasures to come

My ship's coming in...

As the quayside draws near I look out for my girl
To see if she's waiting for me
With hope in my heart that she waits in the crowd
For her sailor man back from the sea

My ship's coming in...

She's not waiting there on the quay
I search every face in the crowd
I am thinking, Oh where can she be
Then I hear her voice so clear and loud

My ship's coming in...

She welcomes me home with a kiss,
I wallow in her ruby lips
She waited for me for all of this time
Now I swear that's the last of my trips

My ship's coming in...

Safe harbour is near
My ship's coming in
As homeward we steer
My ship's coming in

When British sailors are getting close to blighty’s shores sailing into the English Channel, some start to get very happy or sad or even a bit delirious at the thought of getting home to loved ones. This is known by sailors as “The Channels”.
